Being born into the Koirala family, Sujata Koirala was involved in politics from an early stage of her life. Most of the family members have remained prominent figures in Nepali Congress party since the country's first democratic movement. Three members of the family, all brothers (Matrika Prasad Koirala, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, Girija Prasad Koirala) have been Prime Ministers of Nepal.
Sujata Koirala is at present Central working committee member, Head of the International Relations Department and Member of the Parliamentary Board of the Nepali Congress Party. She has served as the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nepal.
Not only in politics, Koirala is actively involved in social works also. She is founder president of Girija Prasad Koirala Foundation for Democracy, Peace and Development (GPKF) and the Sushma Koirala Memorial Trust (SKMT).
