Space Sought for Women in Politics

KATHMANDU 26 Nov. 2013:

Newly elected Constituent Assembly members today said women’s participation in politics is a must to ensure women’s empowerment and national development.

Speaking at an interaction on ‘Women participation in CA and gender issues’ that Sancharika Samuha had organised Nepali Congress leader Sujata Koirala said only a few women got elected under the FPTP system because the parties feared that they have slim chances of winning direct elections.

She said, “Though there’s no dearth of capable and educated women, political parties hesitate to give them responsibilities and tickets to contest polls. Therefore, women politicians are lagging behind.”
